2011.2.585Description
Carte-de-Visite photograph of Joseph Cooke [1811-1890], Company A, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Civil War - husband of Sarah Bowman.
Though this is a CDV, it is likely an 1860s or 1870s reproduction made from a negative. This CDV has no tax stamp and was printed by S. G. Rogers, a later photographer. At least one other CDV, owned by Matt Cumberledge in 2015, was printed by photographer A. Wallace and does have a tax stamp. The Wallace CDV is likely an original printed at the time of the photo shoot because the tax stamp dates the image to the Civil War, probably between 1 August 1864 and 1 March 1865 during the time when a tax stamp higher than one cent was used.
This CDV was printed by S. G. Rogers, Photographer, Waynesburg, Pa., most likely from a negative created by A. Wallace, Waynesburg, Pa.Photograph Details
