Notes

The Phelan-Walker Album is preserved in original order. Personal inscriptions and image captions indicate that the album may have once belonged to Mary (Phelan) Hogue [1846-1934], Waynesburg College, Class of 1864. The album was likely passed to her daughter, Jane Phelan "Jany" Hogue [1881-1972], Waynesburg College, Classes of 1904 and 1905, who provided it to her family's alma mater for preservation. Mary (Phelan) Hogue [1846-1934] was the daughter of John Phelan [1806-1874] and Jane (Walker) Phelan [1808-1876]. Mary's husband was Asa Brownfield Hogue [1841-1915], son of Solomon Hoge [1803-1877] and Rachel Huss [1811-1890]. Relatives of both families are represented in the album, as well as other individuals from their community and acquaintance. Notable among the images are Mary's brother John Phelan [1846-1870] and his shipmate Thomas Logan Tulloch [1845-1870], both of whom were lost at sea, off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, with the U.S.S. Oneida on 24 January 1870. The album is archived at the Waynesburg University Paul R. Stewart Museum (Miller Hall, 51 W. College St.; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370). Researched and digitized for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project, 2023.
