Affidavit of Nella (Hoskinson) Baily, dated 11 July 1972, attesting to the identity of her former husband Ralford Baily, a/k/a Ralford Baily Purman. The affidavit was prepared for the Daughters of the American Revolution in support of a pending application.

AFFIDAVIT
I, NELLA HOSKINSON BAILY, residing at 154 West High Street Waynesburg, PA., being duly sworn, depose and say:
A. I am the sister of Clare Hoskinson Garside, now deceased, whose National Number of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is No.34538 and I am using the same ancestrial line for my qualifications to become a member of the Society. We both are daughters of Robert Luther Hoskinson and Margaret Smith Hoskinson (his only wife), named in my accompanying application for membership in the Society. As additional proof I am attaching hereto a photocopy of my birth certificate issued and certified August 28, 1956, by Rae B. Spragg, Clerk of the Orphans Court of Greene County, PA.
B. In my said accompanying application in the section captioned LINEAGE I have stated what I was married to RALFORD BAILY (PURMAN) on June 24, 1921, who was born March 14, 1894 and that I was divorced on March 28, 1927 at Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. I am annexing hereto a photocopy of the original marriage certificate signed by the Reverend Arthur J. Morris and a photocopy of the decree of divorce, certified the 21st day of July, 1927 by Morgan Henderson, Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas of Greene County, PA. Inasmuch as the marriage certificate and divorce decree names my spouse as RALFORD BAILY PURMAN and in my accompanying application for membership in the society my name is NELLA HOSKINSON BAILY and "to insure the identity of each (person) with the records in which he or she appears" as set forth in the pamphlet put out by the National Society (entitled Requirements for and Preparation of Application Papers). I state the following:
(a.) The names RALFORD BAILY AND RALFORD BAILY PURMAN designate and identify one and the same person. RALFORD BAILY (now deceased) was the son of the marriage of FRANK BAILY and EDITH CONKLE. This marriage ended in divorce. RALFORD BAILY's mother, EDITH CONKLE BAILY was on the 9th day of March, 1899, divorced from the above mentioned FRANK BAILY as more fully appears by the records of the Court of Common Pleas of Greene County, PA. at No. 142, October term, 1896. RALFORD BAILY'S mother, EDITH CONKLE BAILY after obtaining the divorce above mentioned, married ANDREW A PURMAN of Waynesburg, PA. RALFORD BAILY continued to live with his mother EDITH CONKLE BAILY PURMAN and said ANDREW A PURMAN and RALFORD used his parental name (RALFORD BAILY) until after he entered Waynesburg High School, which we both attended. He then gradually started to use the name RALFORD BAILY PURMAN and that is the name used in the marriage certificate and the divorce decree. (See the copies annexed hereto). However, RALFORD BAILY who was the son of marriage of FRANK BAILY and EDITH CONKLE we never legally adopted by ANDREW A. Purman who married EDITH CONKLE BAILY. After diligent search of the records of the Courts of Greene County, no record has been found of any preceeding instituted ay ANDREW A. PURMAN and EDITH CONKLE DAILY PURMAN for the adoption of RALFORD BAILY.
(b) In the light of the foregoing, it is clear that the names RALFORD BAILY and RALFORD BAILY PURMAN identify one and the same person. Only one child (a daughter, PEGGY LOUISE BAILY) was born of the marriage of RALFORD BAILY (PURMAN) and me, NELLA HOSKINSON. She was born on July 11, 1923 at Waynesburg, PA. and she properly and always has used the parental name of her father RALFORD BAILY, who, as stated above is the son of the marriage of FRANK BAILY and EDITH CONKLE.
(c) Since my divorce from RALFORD BAILY (PURMAN), I have used the name NELLA HOSKINSON BAILY.

The Hoskinson Series was originally owned by Nella Sophia (Hoskinson) Baily [1893-1975] - wife of Ralford Baily-Purman, daughter of Robert Luther Hoskinson and Margaret Rozella Smith. Nella passed the items to her daughter, Peggy Louise Baily, who later gave them to her friend, Karen Maset. Karen donated the items to Glenn Toothman and Candice Lynn Buchanan for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2016-2018. After digitization, the Hoskinson Series was donated to the Greene County Historical Society for preservation.
