Rebecca Shough was born 16 April 1837 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, making her about 19 years old at the time of this report. In 1860, she married William Penn Hoskinson.
Phrenology is the detailed study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities.

Your social affections are strong you will make a kind and affectionate wife and mother you will love your children, husband and home. Kind and affectionate to your friends. Not any quarrelsome or destructive. Do not care particularly about being rich if home is only agreeable. Do not tell everything you know. Cautious about talking. But would tell your husband everything considering yourselves one. You have a very good opinion of yourself and think strange if others do not appreciate your good qualities as well as you do yourself. You have a very peculiar way of seeking for flattery and do not object to being flattered. You are very cautious and do not let all your intentions be known to any but your most intimate confidants. You are benevolent and kind and obliging. Always respect and reverence. Age, Superiors, Religion and the Creator of the Universe. Can see beauty and creation in the handiwork of the Creator harmony of nature. Accept Revelation as necessary to the enlightenment of the mind. Can listen to thunder or look upon the vivid lightning with awe but not dread. Love all the curiosities of Nature. You have a good flow of ideas but not the power of expressing them to your satisfaction of all times.
You are conscious in all your acts despising deception. Your decision of character is above average. You are not troubled with that disease called Roman Firmness.
Your memory (of individual things persons places and individual things) is good. Your judgment of colour is a little above average. The power of concentration of mind nearly full. Order is nearly full. The power of keeping contracts or noting time nearly full cultivate it a little in punctuality if you desire to be a good singer. You have the power of controlling your vocal organs therefore by cultivating time you will be a good singer, but you cannot make a first rate instrumental musician.
You will reason generally ["from cause to effect" is scratched out] by comparison. You are only moderately fond of eating or drinking. You have the power of [paper creased] in Company. Your natural desire is to preserve life and property that you may enjoy them and have something that you may assist the poor and distressed and thus exercise the benevolent disposition that has been bestowed upon you by the All Wise Creator. The Hoskinson Series was originally owned by Nella Sophia (Hoskinson) Baily [1893-1975] - wife of Ralford Baily-Purman, daughter of Robert Luther Hoskinson and Margaret Rozella Smith. Nella passed the items to her daughter, Peggy Louise Baily, who later gave them to her friend, Karen Maset. Karen donated the items to Glenn Toothman and Candice Lynn Buchanan for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2016-2018. After digitization, the Hoskinson Series was donated to the Greene County Historical Society for preservation.
