Description

Carte-de-visite photograph of Enoch George Rice [1819-1880] - husband of Martha M. Swan, son of Jacob Rice and Hannah Pool. Handwritten inscription on reverse of image reads, "Henry Linton / gr. gr. grandfather / of Mary McCann." This caption indicates that the subject is Henry Linton [1809-1887]. However, context across collections suggests that he is actually Enoch George Rice [1819-1880]. This photograph was taken by Walt A. Smith, a photographer in Licking County, Ohio, where the Enoch George Rice [1819-1880] family resided. A similar image of this same man, identified as Enoch George Rice [1819-1880], is included in the John Robert Rice Collection, see item # RICE-AN001-0002-0004. Enoch George Rice [1819-1880] was a brother to Gredelia (Rice) Vance [1834-1901], which provides a reasonable explanation as to why images of Enoch George Rice [1819-1880] and his wife, Martha M. (Swan) Rice [1820-1899], appear in both the John Robert Rice Collection and the Mary (Vance) McCann Collection. While not impossible, it is less likely that the Lintons would appear in the Rice collection; furthermore, the Lintons have no known geographical connection to the Licking County, Ohio, photographer stamps seen on item # MILB-AN001-0006-0036, item # MILB-AN001-0003-0014, item # RICE-AN001-0002-0003, and item # RICE-AN001-0002-0004. Finally, there are a total of four images identified as Henry Linton [1809-1887] in the Mary (Vance) McCann Collection, but photograph analysis indicates that the pictures are not all of the same people, calling all four identifications into question and requiring further research (see item # MILB-AN001-0002-0029, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0036, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0037, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0038). It seems likely that at least some of the Linton captions were well-meaningfully written in error by later generations that had not personally known the people pictured. This carte-de-visite was probably originally housed in Vance-McFarland Album 03, next to the carte-de-visite of his wife, Martha M. (Swan) Rice [1820-1899], by the same photographer (see item # MILB-AN001-0003-0014). Also see # RICE-AN001-0002-0004. Original, professional photograph from Walt A. Smith, Photographer, Newark, O.
