Twin set of carte-de-visite photographs believed to be Hannah Nancy (Moore) Clutter [1846-1879] - wife of Spencer Blachley Clutter, daughter of Nathaniel Jennings Moore and Sarah Grimes. One of the two CDVs (CAND-AN007-0025-A) has three handwritten inscriptions on the reverse that appear to be written by three different hands: First handwritten inscription: "Hannah N. Clutter." Second handwritten inscription: "92 / McKee." Third handwritten inscription: "J. W. Webster." Hannah Nancy (Moore) Clutter [1846-1879] was a young woman in the 1870s when this picture was taken. She is a good fit for the subject of this photograph. Her name neatly written in the upper-corner is very likely the actual caption. James William Webster [1866-1948] was Hannah's son-in-law. He was married to her daughter, Iva May (Clutter) Webster [1873-1956]. We believe that the second and third inscriptions may have to do with instructions to a photographer who made reprints or enlargements from the CDV. This was a common practice. We often see where photographers wrote the names of their customer (the person ordering prints) on the back of the original photograph. If Iva May (Clutter) Webster inherited this picture of her mother, her relatives may have requested additional copies or she may have wanted an enlargement for her own collection.
