Carte-de-Visite photograph of Mary (Goodwin) Rickey - wife of Benjamin Franklin Rickey, daughter or step-daughter of John Goodwin.
Satisfactory evidence of Mary's exact parentage has yet to be established. She is obviously connected to the family of John Goodwin and his wife, Sarah Gardner, due to her links as a sister or half-sister to their other children; however, there are clear problems with the claim that she is a daughter of the marriage of John Goodwin and Sarah Gardner:
(1) Mary is not named as a child in John Goodwin's Will (Greene County, Pennsylvania, Will Book, 3: 284, estate file no. 1839, John Goodwin Will and Estate; Office of the Register & Recorder, Courthouse, Waynesburg.) Based on her birth date Mary is believed to be the first-born or at least certainly one of the eldest Goodwin children. One of the next eldest, Andrew Jackson Goodwin, was specifically noted as "my step son" in John Goodwin's Will. Could Mary and Andrew be from another marriage of Sarah Gardner? Could they be children of one of John's siblings or other relatives that he may have adopted?
(2) Mary's obituary in the Greene County Democrat notes her as the half-sister of Sheriff John T. Goodwin who was actually associated with that newspaper. For the writer to add such a specification as "half-sister" and when we consider John's closeness to the staff there, this notation cannot just be ignored.
The photograph is in a Carte-de-Visite size photograph album that originally belonged to Eliza Jane (Goodwin) Supler [1846-1917] - wife of Richard W. Supler, daughter of Daniel Goodwin and Julia Ann Braden.Collection
