The man is believed to be Benjamin Bell Woodruff Denny [1852-1923] pictured here with his four nieces. Standing in back is Jane M. (Phelan) Drake [1877-1964] - daughter of Benjamin's sister, Hannah Luse (Denny) Phelan. Across the front [Left-Right] are Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972], Helen (Denny) Howard [1896-1981], and Josephine Denny [1893-1992] - daughters of Benjamin's brother, Eleazer Luse Denny. ABOUT THE FAMILY: Meeker Woodruff Denny [1816-1875] and his wife, Jane (Luse) Denny [1820-1895], had four children: Hannah Luse (Denny) Phelan [1850-1937], Benjamin Bell Woodruff Denny [1852-1923], Mary Woodruff Denny [1858-1937], and Eleazer Luse Denny [1865-1910]. The four girls in the photograph were the only surviving grandchildren of Meeker and Jane. Benjamin married but had no surviving children. His obituary in the Waynesburg Republican, 8 March 1923, states: "He was cheerful and genial in disposition and made friends readily. His devotion to his family was unusually strong." The Josephine Denny Collection was passed from Eleazer Luse Denny [1865-1910] and his wife, Louise (Inghram) Denny [1867-1956], to their daughters, Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972], Josephine Denny [1893-1992], and Helen (Denny) Howard [1896-1981]. Josephine Denny passed the collection to Farley Toothman who owned and shared it with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project between 2004 and 2025.
