Description

Cabinet card believed to be James H. Fordyce [1842-1912] wearing a membership medal from the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization for Civil War veterans. James H. Fordyce was a member of Company F, 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, during the Civil War. He enlisted 16 August 1861 and was mustered out 14 March 1863. He lived in Greene County, Pennsylvania, most of his life. Sometime after the 1890 Census, when he appears in Gilmore Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, James moved to Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa, where he appears in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, and died in 1912. James H. Fordyce [1842-1912] was the husband of Sarah Jane Murdock, and son of James H. Fordyce and Nancy Bowers. ADDRESSING CONFLICTS: Another James H. Fordyce [1820-1895] also served in the Civil War with Company K, 140th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He lived most of his life in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Based on the age of the man in the photograph, it seems that this James would be too old to be the man pictured. Handwritten inscription on reverse of image reads, "Jim Fordyce." Original, professional photograph from Kough's Photographic Art Studio, Cor. Morgantown and Church Sts., Uniontown, Pa.
