Scope and Content

T. A. Lyons, "The Loss of the Oneida," Scribner's Monthly, an Illustrated Magazine for the People (September 1880), Volume 20, Issue 5, pages 750-758. This article is historically significant to Greene County, Pennsylvania, because one of the young men to lose his life in this event was John R. Phelan [1847-1870] of Waynesburg. He was a son of John Phelan and Jane Walker. John's tombstone, which appears to be a cenotaph only, in Green Mount Cemetery reads, "Erected / In The Memory / Of / Lieut. John R. Phelan / U. S. N. / Aged 23 Years & 4 Mo. / who was lost on board / the U.S. Corvette Oneida / by a collision with the British / steamer Bombay on the 24th / day of Jan. 1870 in the Bay / of Yokohama, Japan." An original printing of the article was removed from the magazine and sold by itself in an eBay auction, during which it was purchased by Candice Lynn Buchanan who shared it with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2006.
