Carte-de-visite photograph of William Henry Dana [1846-1906] - husband of Emma Jane Tuttle, son of Junius Dana and Martha Potter. William was a Civil War veteran, having served as a musician with Company A, 171st Ohio Infantry Regiment and Company D, 196th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In 1869, William established Dana's Musical Institute in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. In 1875, the school catalog lists William as "Teacher of Theory and Organ; Conductor of Oratorio." (Source: Catalogue of Dana's Musical Institute (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: William P. Kildare, 1875); Library of Congress Music Division.) Margaret Virginia (Thompson) Pauley [1855-1937] who assembled the album in which this photograph appears, was a graduate of Dana's Musical Institute, Class of 1875. Handwritten inscription on album page reads, "W. H. Dana / Warren, Ohio." Original, professional photograph from Potter, No. 1 River Block, Warren, Ohio.

The Pauley-Thompson Album once belonged to the family of John Flenniken Pauley [1858-1929] and his wife, Margaret Virginia Thompson [1855-1937]. The album was found in a building set for demolition and was donated to the Cornerstone Genealogical Society (144 E. Greene St., PO Box 547; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370). Shared with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2007.
