James was a graduate of Dana's Musical Institute in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio (Class of 1874). His schoolmate, Margaret Virginia (Thompson) Pauley [1855-1937] (Class of 1875), assembled the album in which this photograph appears. Notes

The Pauley-Thompson Album once belonged to the family of John Flenniken Pauley [1858-1929] and his wife, Margaret Virginia Thompson [1855-1937]. The album was found in a building set for demolition and was donated to the Cornerstone Genealogical Society (144 E. Greene St., PO Box 547; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370).
