Scope and Content

The Mahannah-Scott Bible has quite an interesting combination of entries. The provenance has not been recorded and the title page is missing, so we have no stated history or publication date. Accordingly, we have to try to tell the Bible's story based on its entries. The common denominator seems to be Mary Ann (Kysinger) (Mahannah) Scott [1777c-1848]. The Family Bible begins with the children of John Mahannah and his first wife, Eleanor. These are followed by the children of John Mahannah and his second wife, Mary Ann. Her maiden name, Kysinger, comes from their 12 June 1800 marriage record on file in Washington County, Maryland. After John died, the widowed Mary Ann remarried to Abraham Scott [1756-1845]. He was a widower too. The births of Abraham and Mary Ann's children together are specifically listed on the Births pages, but even several of Abraham's children from his first marriage appear on the Bible's deaths and marriages pages. Ultimately, Abraham's son, David, a child of his first marriage, seems to have inherited this Bible, in spite of what would seem to be its Mahannah origins. David is particularly noted in Abraham's Will (Greene County, Pennsylvania Will Book, 2: 204, estate file no. 1147) as the son who was helping the family. David married Mary Laughlin and entered all of their children onto the Birth pages.
