Context

Cries and Whispers for Gandhi is part of a series of works that depicts the bodies or corpses of political martyrs, including Ché Guevara, Malcolm X, and Puerto Rican nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos. Sánchez foregrounds an photo of Gandhi in a collage of imagery- a dove of peace, celestial orbs, and fluid lines and circles. While the dove anchors the top of the composition the bottom features a sharp, thin white grid that also resembles crosshairs and possibly alludes to Gandhi’s assassination. Though this series Sánchez is outspoken about preserving the memories and resilient spirits of political icons who were killed for their beliefs, asserting art’s potential to chronicle history.
