A nude woman stepping out of the bathContext
Chicago native Aaron Bohrod began working as a professional painter in the 1930s while also doing commercial artistic work for local department stores before turning to trompe l’oeil paintings in the 1950s, for which he is best known. Bohrod’s early works were in large part influenced by two consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships (1936-37 and 1837-38) which allowed the artist to travel the country painting scenes from American life. He was particularly interested in the changing relationship between town and country: a main street in Oklahoma, locals in a courthouse lobby, an abandoned barn in a steadily industrialized suburban landscape, and a junk yard, for example. During World War II Bohrod served in the Army War Art Unit where he painted scenes and landscapes at home and abroad. Bohrod’s career, which spanned the majority of the 20th century, reflects a shift in artistic themes from social realism to a more playful, quasi-surrealistic style.
Untitled (Nude), though undated, likely belongs to an earlier period Bohrod’s work where similar etchings of nude figures can be found. These etchings also resemble contemporaneous works by John Sloan, a known influence on Bohrod. Unlike the immense, realistic detail found in the artist’s better known etchings and paintings, this work in some sense resembles Matisse’s nude bathers, but updated and domesticated. Rather than depicting the bather outdoors in a natural environment, Bohrod’s figure rests her foot on the bathtub, clearly inside a bathroom.Acquisition
