Description

Photograph of Chicago artist Phyllis Bramson with Kabuki mask. Bramson holds red berries in red stained hands and has birds of paradise flowers arranged in her hair. She is smiling with her eyes closed.

Context

Carroll started this project as a way to say thanks and celebrate Chicago artists. Each photograph was specific to the artist and reflected their personality and artwork. In a 1991 Chicago Tribune Magazine article, Carroll states "referring directly to or re-creating some aspect of the imagery in the arti's work became the working method for the entire project." The subject of this photograph, Phyllis Bramson is a surrealist painter best known for her maximalist style and cosmic disorder. A self-described “painter-comedian,” which can be seen in how Carroll has depicted her in this photograph. She has stated that she has a strong interest in Oriental theatre and figuration and that her art expresses desire.
