A man sitting with his arms resting on his legs. His face rests in one hand.Context
Investigating what the artist called “the precarious balancing of realistic and abstract expression,” Roth’s canvases and works on paper showcase her formal training in drawing melded with fleeting moments of formal abstraction. Also seeking to strike a balance between tradition and experimentation, Roth’s works often have unfinished quality to them and seek to capture the complexity, flow, and liveliness of the human form.
This oil painting veers more into the balance between figure drawing and abstraction most characteristic of Roth’s works. Though undated, this latter shows a dancer in pensive repose and whose bright legwarmers and tights suggest Roth remained closely connected to dance, music, and other forms of artistic expression throughout her long career.Acquisition
