Context

The Lega peoples originate in present day Congo and have a unique governing system that helps to counterbalance society. This governing system is controlled by the Bwami society in Lega culture. The Bwami society is a society that helps guide moral development of the individual and the governing relations of their people. This sculpture is an Inginga figure owned by high ranking members of the Bwami society. These figures would serve as tools in the initiation ceremonies of members becoming a part of the Bwami.
