Graffiti covered window panes looking into a laundromat. A person in blue stands at a machine loading clothes with carts of clothing around them.Context
This work is part of Fernandez’s series Lavanderia (2002-03) which captures nighttime views through the windows of laundromats on Los Angeles’s East Side. Taken at night, these photographs blur the movements of predominantly Latinx patrons engaged in domestic labor, and highlight the graffiti tags and architectural details of the buildings. Through these series, Fernandez explores personal, cultural, and social issues within larger frameworks, specifically exploring the cultural boundaries and layered histories within Southern California and east Los Angeles.Acquisition
