Context

Walkuski is of the later Polish School of Posters in the final years when Poland was under communist rule which ended in 1991. The Polish School of Posters was most active during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, when post-World War 2 Poland suffered under strict Soviet Rule. In all other art forms in Poland during this period, artists had to adhere to state-imposed Social Realist standards, because the government wanted to promote tourism, film, theater and television from their state-run Ministry of Art and Culture, artists in Polish School of Posters had artistic freedom and created bold, avant-garde designs for these promotional purposes that often-had subversive meanings
