Context

This poster is advertising a production of Celestyna, an mid 15th century spanish play that follows the actions of the madam of a brothel and a local nobleman. This poster was made in the context of the later years of the communist led Polish People’s Republic. Under this rule, opportunity for artistic expression was intensely limited, and creating advertisements such as this offered a way for Polish artists of this period to do just that, create. Therefore, posters like this tended to be more artistically complex and creative then their purpose necessitated.

Notes

There is some doubt about the cited artist of this work, Waldemar Jerzy Marszałek. Marszałek was born in 1960, but this poster was apparently created in 1978, meaning Marszałek would have been only 18 at the time. It is unlikely that Marszałek would have been commissioned by the Teatr Dramatyczny w Wałbrzychu at such a young age, especially considering he did not graduate from his higher education program at The Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk until 1985.
