Theater.Context
This poster, an advertisement for the classic play Antigone, was made by Nowosielski in the context of the communist led Polish People’s Republic. Under this rule, opportunity for artistic expression was intensely limited, and creating advertisements such as this offered a way for Polish artists of this period to do just that, create. Therefore, posters like this tended to be more artistically complex and creative then their purpose necessitated. This artist was specifically a member of the “Polish Poster School,” a group of artists who not only used posters as a medium for artist expression but for general expression as well. Artists in the Polish Poster School used painterly techniques and intense symbolism in order to place their posters in the context of fine art as well as politically charged art.Acquisition
