A jubilant cat standing in bright red, yellow, and blue clothing with bright and colorful shapes alongside a large clock in the background.Context
This work was created by Hanna Bodnar in 1977, during the peak of the communist rule of the Polish People’s Republic. Under this rule, opportunity for artistic expression was intensely limited, and creating advertisements such as this offered a way for Polish artists of this period to do just that, create. Therefore, posters like this tended to be more artistically complex and creative then their purpose necessitated. While this poster is an excellent example of the previous statement, it has not been pulled for examination by any students or professors within the past few years. This artist was specifically a member of the “Polish Poster School,” a group of artists who not only used posters as a medium for artist expression but for general expression as well. Artists in the Polish Poster School used painterly techniques and intense symbolism in order to place their posters in the context of fine art as well as politically charged art. Bodnar tended to work most often with film posters, and this poster is an interesting example of a poster advertising an international film. It seems Bodnar was attempting to match the style of this poster with Japanese aesthetics of the time – as she was likely commissioned by the film studio – which results in this poster appearing quite different from the others.Acquisition
