Context

Rabbits were a repeating motif in Julia Thecla's paintings, but were more typical of her earlier works of the 1930's and 40's. This painting combines this earlier use of rabbits with the vertical landscape (two thirds sky and one third curved ground) that she used often in her later paintings. Thecla was a Chicago artist and generally considered a surrealist, though this piece shows only very subtle hints of surrealism.
