Context

Using heavily layered pigment, Sulymenko depicts anonymous figures inhabiting vast, illusive landscapes and enclosed, nondescript, interiors. Her surreal works carry intimations of contemporary anxieties through recurring themes of loneliness and absurdity. “I’m always passionate about my characters, no matter how marginal; they are generalizations rather than real people, but I like to think that they have a life of their own beyond the frame,” Maria Sulymenko explained.
