Context

For over two decades Chicago-based artists Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger have collaborated on works that explore intimacy and time. Repetition and duration are common motifs in their practice, as they consider the experience of marriage and long-term commitment, as well as the ephemeral nature of human life. Miller & Shellabarger often make use of craft methods, including knitting and paper cutting, and regularly feature self-portraits of both men to depict moments of affection that are at once queer and universal. FlowerFucker is a black paper chain of silhouette portraits of the two artists, depicting their nude bodies. They are connected both by holding hands, and through a flowering plant at the center of the composition with two blossoms, which overtly allude to their genitals. The image repeats identically throughout the strand of paper, and is displayed suspended in the air.
