Context

The play was held at the Teatr Dramatyczny which was founded in 1949 in Warsaw. This poster was made in the context of the communist led Polish People’s Republic. Under this rule, opportunity for artistic expression was intensely limited, and creating advertisements such as this offered a way for Polish artists of this period to do just that, create. Therefore, posters like this tended to be more artistically complex and creative then their purpose necessitated.
