Context

When she was in her 40s, Prussian became fascinated with aging: “aging repels me. It’s a narcissistic injury. The culture in which we live is so addicted to youth and thinness, and I’m not a thin woman,” she says. Most of the figures she represents in her series titled Prismacolor are representations of her women friends but depicted as older women. Inspired and influenced by other painters she saw at the Art Institute of Chicago such as Ivan Albright and his portrayals of the body's vulnerabilities to age, disease, and death.
