Jael, Ogden International High School, 2019. A young black woman, Jael, looks into a bathroom mirror.Context
While completing a seven-year artist residency in Chicago Public Schools, Pinney conducted a detailed study of predominantly Black and Latinx high schools and how a global pandemic, escalating racial and gender inequalities, and gun violence have affected students. From 2019 to 2022, she photographed day-to-day life at Ogden International in West Town and Nicholas Senn in Edgewater. The resulting series, In Their Own Light: Photographs from Chicago Public Schools, offers a unique, personal look at the city’s youth.Acquisition
