Description

Street signs written in Japanese, one shows an adult and child holding hands, and a bicycle. A circular mirror shows the back of an apartment complex with cars parked.

Context

Lerner’s series of photography focused on capturing the “eye”, of which there are a few representations in this selection, create associations between seeing and looking, as both photographer and subject from Chicago to New York and even Tokyo. His experimentations with light box photography is represented in some of the light “bird” photographs and abstractions or overlays and double exposures of bodies. And, his 1930s representations of immigrants to Chicago are also represented amongst this set.
