Michelle Grabner (American, b. 1962) Untitled, 2013 Flashe on panel Collection of DePaul Art Museum, gift of an anonymous donor 2016.158 Michelle Graber is known for her abstract paintings that borrow their patterns and designs from items found within the domestic sphere, like tablecloths and blankets. Her hand-painted gingham stripes, in a minimalistic grid, blur the boundaries between fine art and craft. Painted on industrial wood panel, rather than traditional, stretched canvas, Grabner’s work rejects the softer quality of woven craft fabrics like cotton, wool, or yarn, while appropriating their appearance.
