Zoe Nelson (American, b. 1983) Swipe Right, 2017 Oil on canvas Collection of DePaul Art Museum, Art Acquisition Endowment Fund and restricted gift of Scott J. Hunter 2017.39 Swipe Right is at once a personal reflection of contemporary romance and the navigation of relationships in today’s internet-based society. Originally developed by the popular dating app, Tinder, swipe right refers to a single movement of the finger on a phone screen, used to affirm one’s attraction to a potential date, partner, or fling. Here, an omnipotent thumb hovers over the shapes and forms of a female body. The thumb’s placement between the legs and oversized proportions give rise to the notions of female desire, which drive the title’s command to swipe right. Intersecting the composition is the bright glow of the handheld device, through which these dating, desire, and online personal connection determinations are made.
