For nearly twenty years, Carrie Gundersdorf has mined scientific imagery and astronomical photography of the cosmos to create seemingly abstract paintings and works on paper. Considering what is visible or invisible to the naked eye and how the color spectrum is perceived in outer space, this work depicts the brightest ring, comprised of ice boulders, circling the planet Uranus. “Her work connects the field of art to the scientific exploration of the edges of empirical knowledge of the universe and the capacity for discovery and wonder. While attempting to observe and understand what remains out of reach, the pursuit ultimately reflects back on her, the observer and artist.” (artadia.com)
