For three decades, Chicago-based artist Julia Fish has used her house and its vernacular architecture— a storefront workspace designed by Theodore Steuben in 1922— as the basis for a system of mapping color, form, and light in paintings and works on paper. Rendering architectural details at actual size and from observation, she creates a subjective response to objective information, informed by effects of light in space, time of day, the seasons, cardinal direction, and her own physical vantage point. The Threshold works and related series, made between 2009 and the present, more than depicting a specific object or site engage with questions about the idea of the threshold. The paintings are each identified by a color from the spectrum, though all six colors are embedded within the structural lines of each painting.
Threshold, SouthEast – Two [ spectrum : orange with grey ], is bracketed by irregular shapes on the left and right, which are created by the doors and doorjambs. In this series the thresholds mark an entry and an exit and are oriented such that the artist’s body and the imagined body of the viewer are already within the heart of the home: these paintings map a literal path of movement, but their work truly begins as a threshold of consciousness for both artist and viewer.Acquisition
