Context

Short redefines ideas of abstraction, originality, and color within his work. His process is critical to fully understanding his painstakingly executed paintings. Using photocopies of repeatedly Xeroxed construction paper in various colors, the artist reproduces the marks made by a common copy machine by translating each shadow and spot by hand onto the canvas. Untitled (white) repeats, by hand, the impressions made by a white sheet of construction paper repeatedly copied in a photo copier. In this way, the reproduction becomes the original for the abstract painting. It is this production of the abstract and the transition from technology back to the man-made that promotes a certain “slowing down” in our technological time, when the marrying of art and technology are becoming more heavily intertwined and fast-paced.
