Untitled belongs to a series of drawings and sculptures created by O’Brien leading up to his major exhibition of sculpture at the Renaissance Society in 2011 curated by Hamza Walker and his solo exhibition at the MCA in 2014 curated by Naomi Beckwith. For O’Brien, drawing is not merely a preparatory or preliminary practice, but an economical and expedient way to produce work in contrast to the more labor-intensive ceramic sculptures. This work is notably more muted in terms of its use of color, but nonetheless is exemplary of O’Brien’s use of abstraction and repetition. The simple yet dense geometrical shapes create an almost architectural effect reminiscent of stained glass.Acquisition
