Description

JaKolbi D’Angelo Lard, 2002-2022, Ogden International High School, 2019. A young black man, JaKolbi, at Odgen High School's 2019 prom. He is dressed in a sparkling and be-jeweled jacket with a broken heart shaved into his hair.

Context

While completing a seven-year artist residency in Chicago Public Schools, Pinney conducted a detailed study of predominantly Black and Latinx high schools and how a global pandemic, escalating racial and gender inequalities, and gun violence have affected students. From 2019 to 2022, she photographed day-to-day life at Ogden International in West Town and Nicholas Senn in Edgewater. The resulting series, In Their Own Light: Photographs from Chicago Public Schools, offers a unique, personal look at the city’s youth. At 20 years old, JaKolbi was tragically lost due to gun violence on Chicago's south side on January 16, 2022.
