Description

This is a Polish theater poster advertising the play Spór. The majority of the composition is sourced from Joseph Wright of Derby’s painting An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, in which a group of people are huddled around a central point. In Aleksiun’s interpretation, he has collaged another smaller scene of trees (with even smaller people) as the focal point that Wright’s characters are focusing on. The inscription in the top right corner names the play (Spór), the director (Henryk Tomaszewski), and the theater (Wroclawski Teatr Pantomimy). Theater Poster.

Context

Aleksiun is the main artist in composing the poster, but included a reworking of Joseph Wright of Derby’s painting An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, which is why Wright is co-listed as artist. Henryk Tomaszewski, (artist of object 2009.163), who is noted in the inscription seemed to be a director as well as poster artist in his career. The Rosenberg Collection notes that, “The 1970’s saw a painterly emphasis and increasing influence from outside of Warsaw. The Wroclaw Four reflected the new emerging artists; Jan Jaromir Aleksiun, Jerzy Czerniawski, Eugeniusz Get Stankiewicz and Jan Sawka. Their approach included more irony, paradox and symbolism.”
