This is a Polish theater poster advertising a play. The composition looks like a piece work collage, with a blue stamp-like shape as the background. In the foreground two faces in profile turn toward each other, with a red man on the left, and a green woman on the right. The woman has one horn protruding out of the top of her head, while the man has a multitude of horns that intertwine with hers. Black text lies on a red background in the bottom right corner (also where the year 1981 is inscribed), while more white text on a black background is in the bottom right corner .
Theater poster.Context
Get-Stankiewicz was born in 1942 in Oszmiana, Belarus, but most of his career took place in Wroclaw, Poland. The Rosenberg Collection notes that,
“The 1970’s saw a painterly emphasis and increasing influence from outside of Warsaw.
The Wroclaw Four reflected the new emerging artists; Jan Jaromir Aleksiun, Jerzy Czerniawski, Eugeniusz Get Stankiewicz and Jan Sawka. Their approach included more irony, paradox and symbolism.”Acquisition
