Context

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted Chicago-based artist Marc Fischer’s (who works under the name Public Collectors) current projects Library Excavations—where he explores the holdings of Chicago’s public libraries—and The Courtroom Artist Residency Report—where Fischer brings artists to observe court proceedings at Cook County Criminal Court—many artists and creatives were suddenly without access to their usual venues for sharing and displaying work. Fischer, who has been publishing zines and artists’ books for over 30 years, equipped with two Risograph printers, decided to launch Quaranzine, a one-page zine that could serve as a creative space for artists to disseminate work during the pandemic. The project resulted in 100 one-page double-sided zines that Fischer printed daily, with contributions from artists, activists, and poets from Chicago and beyond including Jim Duignan, Rachel Harper, Deep Time Chicago, Paul Nudd, Matthew Girson, and many others. Shared online and distributed widely across the city in print form, Quaranzine soon became a mobile and nimble site for text and image-based contributions ranging from reflections on the pandemic and social justice to recipes and comics. After completing the project on June 22, 2020, Fischer compiled the 100 issues to form the complete Quaranzine in a limited edition of 55.
