Context

Wieslaw Rosocha was a Polish illustrator, graphic designer, and poster maker who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Rosocha was a prominent participant in independent and revolutionary art practices during the period of martial law in Poland in his early career. Rosocha went on to collaborate with a variety of theaters (this piece was done for a theater) and magazines, and over the years began creating posters recreationally. This particular piece displays one of Rosocha’s common motifs - a silhouetted head. Rosocha won many awards throughout his career and had his work featured in both collaborative and individual exhibitions in the 21st century, many of them focusing on the Polish Poster School, of which he was a member. This piece can offer historical value for understanding the sociopolitics of post war eastern Europe. Furthermore, it is an excellent example of Rosocha’s specific style.
