Michelangelo, the famous renaissance artist, was commisioned by Pope Paul III to design the Piazza del Campidoglio in the 16th century. In 1981 a replica of the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius was made to replace the original statue as it was moved inside the Capitoline Museums for safer keeping.
