Context

Burroughs became a notable figure of the Chicago arts scene (and the broader art world) in the mid 20th century. She is remembered not only for her visual art, but her poetry and activism as well. She founded both the South Side Community Arts Center and the DuSable Black History Museum in Chicago, showing her dedication to creating a prominent space for African American artists in Chicago and beyond. Her works are known for exploring themes of childhood and the Black experience, and the majority are works on paper.
