Description

Mantle of ribbed black silk with black silk damask trimmed with 4" long black fringe. The neck opening has no collar and is trimmed with a fairly narrow band of black silk ribbon, now mostly frayed. The body of the garment is constructed of a black ribbed silk fabric. Long lappets in the front extend well past the waistline. They close with a series of 12 large hooks and eyes, with the edge of the left lappet on top; this long edge is trimmed with black fringe, as are the bottoms of both lappets. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and are very full to accommodate the large puffed sleeves that were fashionable circa 1890. The back is of the black silk ribbed fabric, with the black damask extending beyond the shoulder area on the sides.
