Description

Ben Elmer Farm - Subterranean Clover Plant on 1939 Chevrolet. A-0025-000131 Companion Print P-6247 Note in file - "A single plant of subterranean clover. This legume was developed in Australia although a native of Europe. The Oregon Experiment Station introduced the plant to this State. The first Clackamas planting appeared in experimental plots established in cooperation with the State experiment Station on the Ben Elmer place at Clarkes (Oregon) in 1938. This legume received immediate farmer attention. In 1939 Thirty seven Clackamas County farmers planted 700 lbs. of the Tallarook strain. Three planted the early strain later discarded. Sixteen planted 290 lbs. of the Mt. Barker, and a mid season strain. Within a few years, subterranean clover seed was planted very extensively in the red hills of the county and on bottom soils as well. Seed production became profitable and is still raised extensively in 1958. In the late 40's, the Extension Service introduced New Zealand white clover which became an immediate success on all soils in pasture mixtures. But subterranean clover remains popular. Its introduction was an outstanding agricultural event."
