Erected in 1925 - Six Sides. This Photo Shows the "First School in Washington was Taught by John Ball at Vancouver A. D. 1833" and "Under the influence of Dr. John McLaughlin, Manager of the Hudson Bay Company, Civilization of Washington Started at Vancouver A. D. 1825." On back of Photo - "In 1832 Nathaniel Wyeth, a Massachusetts merchant, came to Vancouver to establish and American trading post. Among those who come with him was a young New Englander names John Ball. In return for McLoughlin's hospitality, he asked to be put to work. The Factor was delighted to find he had been a teacher and immediately put him in charge of the education of the 24 white and Indian children at the Fort. So John Ball became the first schoolmaster on the Northwest coats." Marker is at the intersection of E. Evergreen Way and Officers Row on E. Evergreen Way.
