Teal is an ideal in-water boat for the Museum, providing the appearance of a seventy-year-old classic runabout with modern power and modern construction. Riding in Teal is like stepping back in time with all of the security of a modern craft. Riders can enjoy the soft ride and handling characteristics that made Gar Wood boats famous throughout the world.
As youngsters, Tom and Larry Turcotte grew up with Gar Wood boats. In the 1990s they made a decision to leave their respective professions and begin building reproductions of Gar Wood's famous line of standardized boats. Teal is one of the first Turcotte reproductions of the 28-foot Gar Wood runabout. It was based it on the design of the 1937 triple cockpit model which was often referred to as Gar Wood's Flagship. The measurements were lofted from an original Gar Wood 28 foot runabout hull and precisely reproduced. Carefully graded select Honduras mahogany was used to plank the hull. By book-matching the planks just as was done at the Gar Wood factory, the hull planking appears identical on each side.
Teal's seats are upholstered in deeply grained dark red leather matching exactly the original Gar Wood roll and pleat style that provides comfort and protection for the stitching from exposure by the sun. The hardware is exactly duplicated from molds prepared from the original fittings. The new castings are hand polished naval bronze that are triple chrome plated.
There are major differences between the Turcotte Gar Wood reproduction and the original Gar Wood that are not apparent to observers, for the appearance of both boats is identical and will challenge any observer to tell which one is the reproduction. It is the method of construction where significant differences are incorporated. The Turcotte Gar Wood incorporates modern technology to achieve remarkable results not formerly available to the boat building industry. The use of epoxy resin technology helps the Turcottes to create a hull that is virtually one integrated unit bonded by waterproof resins that is seamless, remarkably strong and impervious to the normal failures of traditional boat construction. Teal has been extensively used for sixteen seasons by a wide range of operators and is in excellent physical condition.Collection
