John Keeshan was born in Queens, New York in 1939. He spent his youth in Queens before relocating to California at the age of 12. John joined the United States Navy out of high school and spent time on Midway Island in the Pacific. He moved back to New York, where he met his wife Eileen Gallagher. They were married in 1960 and had two children, Nancy and Edwin. John and Eileen moved to Montauk in 1973 and purchased their first property overlooking the ocean in Hither Hills. John ran his own business Keeshan Real Estate. John is very active in community organizations. He volunteered and served on the board of the Montauk Fire Department and Ambulance Service, Montauk Downtown Association, and the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. John was one of the founding members of the Montauk Library, and served on the board for many years overseeing the building and grounds. John organized the first Turkey Run for Fun on Thanksgiving that continues through the present day. John was also an active photographer capturing portraits and landscapes of people and places in Montauk.Oral History Details
