Bill Akin (born November 2, 1944, in North Tarrytown, NY) started sportfishing in Montauk in 1950 with his father, going on to travel the globe in pursuit of game fish. He was on the board of directors of Wild Oceans, a marine fish conservation organization, from 1995 to 2012, and was president of the Concerned Citizens of Montauk, a local environmental organization, for 10 years. He also founded a classical concert series called Music for Montauk in 1980.
Bill is the author of The Equanimity of Fishes: Stories and Reflections from Seven Decades in Montauk and The Golden Age of Montauk Sportfishing: Interviews with Eight Legendary Captains. His oral history interview recalls the glory days of trophy fishing at the Montauk Yacht Club as well as his evolving personal views of large game fishing. Bill also shares his observations about changes to the culture and landscape of Montauk over seven decades.Oral History Details
