Joan Taylor was born in the Bronx in 1931. At the age of three she came to Montauk with her parents to camp with her grandparents in Hither Hills. For the last 89 years she has continued to visit Montauk during the summers. When she was seven, her grandparents purchased a lot for $100 in the Mirror Development and built a house. Some years later her parents bought a house nearby that is still in the family. In the oral history interview, Joan recalls the abundant blackberry and blueberry bushes lining the streets and the sprawling views of the ocean seen from their home that no longer exist because of real estate development and tree growth. As a teenager during World War II, Joan speaks about when the U.S. Navy and Military occupied Camp Hero and the U.S. Naval Base on Fort Pond Bay, she recounts target practices that would make the house shake and blackout drills. She describes the area over her 89 years of visiting, remarking that the beach is the only thing that hasn’t changed.Oral History Details
